OUR PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH TO AGRICULTURE
At Tierra Madre, agriculture and reforestation are at the heart of our commitment to regeneration. Over the years, we have abandoned conventional methods to embrace a resilient, low-maintenance model, perfectly adapted to the tropical environment.
Instead of forcing crops into an ecosystem that rejects them, we grow what naturally thrives here: edible perennials, fruit trees, leafy vegetables, and native plants — reducing labor and increasing our food sovereignty.
Our approach is based on regenerative agriculture, inspired by agroforestry and syntropic farming. We no longer see the farm as something separate from the forest, but the other way around: our food grows within a living, multi-layered system that mimics the dynamics of a tropical forest. Trees play a central role — not only for their fruits or foliage but as allies in soil enrichment, water retention, shade, and biodiversity support.
We completely avoid chemical inputs, synthetic fertilizers, and plowing. Instead, we apply techniques like “chop and drop”, cutting fresh biomass and spreading it around crops to feed the soil, retain moisture, and suppress weeds. The land is never left bare, and organic matter remains in the cycle. Every pruning, every fallen leaf, every root has its function.
Animals are no longer the central engine of our system; nature provides fertility. We compost directly in place and let the forest do its work. No machinery, no noise — only hand tools and silence — so that wildlife can follow its course without disturbance.
This is not just agriculture. It is a living system that stores carbon, protects biodiversity, feeds us with highly nutritious products, and heals the land. A forest that nourishes — and regenerates.
