LEARN BY LIVING IT

Educational Groups & Learning Experiences

Tierra Madre is more than a place to stay. It is a living project where regenerative agriculture, forest restoration, biodiversity conservation and autonomous living have been explored and developed in practice for more than a decade.

At Tierra Madre, learning happens in the forest, in the gardens, around the table and through the work of a living regenerative project.

For more than a decade, we have explored regenerative agriculture, forest restoration, biodiversity conservation and more autonomous ways of living in practice.

We welcome schools, universities, study-abroad programs and educational travel groups that want to connect what they study with what they can see and do.

Each group’s stay is designed around its participants, learning goals and interests. Programs begin at three days and include accommodation and three daily meals.

A Living Classroom

The property itself becomes the classroom. Forests at different stages of regeneration, agroforestry systems, gardens, buildings and renewable-energy systems offer opportunities to observe, ask questions and take part.

A day might move from a discussion about forest succession to planting in an agroforestry system, preparing food together or walking through restored forest.

Students encounter the connections between people, food production and nature within one working project.

Build Your Own Learning Experience

There is no fixed Tierra Madre educational package. We work with teachers, coordinators and educational travel partners to combine learning sessions, practical activities and nature experiences.

Together, we shape the program around the participants’ ages, learning objectives, length of stay, interests, season and desired level of hands-on involvement.

There is therefore no single Tierra Madre educational program. Every group can build its own.

Our Learning Areas

Regenerative Agriculture & Agroforestry

Explore how tropical food systems can produce food while rebuilding soil and supporting biodiversity.

Depending on the group and season, topics may include food forests, syntropic agriculture, natural succession, pruning, propagation, planting, biomass management and dry-season resilience.

Whenever possible, students connect these ideas with practical work in the gardens and agroforestry systems.

Forest Restoration & Conservation

Walk through areas recovering from past agricultural use and observe restoration as an ongoing process.

Groups can explore natural succession, wildlife habitat, biological corridors, water, soil recovery and the relationship between productive land and conservation.

Autonomous & Regenerative Living

Explore the everyday choices involved in rural tropical living: renewable energy, water management, food production, composting, waste reduction, natural building and local materials.

We also discuss the challenges and compromises. Tierra Madre is an evolving project, and what we continue to learn is part of the experience.

Hands-On Participation

Depending on the season and ongoing work, groups may take part in planting, pruning, garden care, forest restoration, food preparation, natural building or other projects.

Activities change throughout the year. Participation connects students with real work that serves a purpose beyond their visit.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

An educational stay can also include time to explore the natural and cultural setting of Guanacaste.

Depending on the program, groups may combine learning modules with guided nature hikes, visits to the agroforestry garden, waterfalls, rivers, natural hot springs, Bahía Salinas and its mangroves, local cooking experiences or Santa Rosa National Park.

The result is a stay with room for learning, practical work, exploration and time together.

Stay, eat, learn & participate

  • Educational programs are immersive stays, starting at three days.

  • Groups stay at Tierra Madre, share meals and experience the property throughout the day.

  • Conversations and observations continue beyond scheduled activities.

  • Accommodation and three daily meals are included, giving the group one base from which to live, learn and explore.

Build your educational experience

Every group comes with different questions and goals. We would love to learn about yours and explore what an educational stay at Tierra Madre could include.

Tell us about your group.

From there, we can combine the different pieces of Tierra Madre into a program designed specifically for your group.
